36 TEXTURES

Chosen Artworks

Fiona Hall - Cell Culture

This art piece is a part of Foina Hall’s Cell Culture collection, in one of her 2002 exhibitions. In this specific piece, Hall constructed a replicate sculpture of a jellyfish, using a white plastic tupperware container for the body of the creature, then connecting it to glass beads that have been sewn together in various shapes to represent the jellyfish’s tentacles. The overall size of sculpture was built to 150 x 250 x 90cm, and was displayed with a range of other plastic container and beaded creatures, in a large wood framed glass display case, known as a vitrine.

Rosalie Gascoigne - Hollyhocks

Rosalie Gascoigne’s three dimensional wall art piece called Hollyhocks, was constructed in 1997 and was a part of her Earth series collection. The piece is made from corrugated iron strips that have been sawn and nailed to two panels of weathered plyboards, that are 90 x 70cm in size, in horizontal alignment. This is an assembly is of found objects which Gascoigne gathered on her scavenging explorations in the harsh Australian landscapes, which much of her art reflects.

THREE ARTWORKS

HALL: CREATURE, REPLICATE, DELICATE

MOFFAT: EXERTION, TRIMMING, LABORIOUS

GASCOIGNE: SCRAP, DISCARDED, RUSTIC

CREATIVE ARTWORK:

This is my HSC Majorwork for Industrial Technology, my favorite and most successful subject at school, as I love designing and building objects and furniture. This sideboard piece I am very proud of, and manage to gain me a spot in the ‘Sydney Timber and Working with Wood Show’, where I was awarded first place in a ‘Young Achievers’ category.

GREAT ARCHITECTURE:

The National Grand Theater, also known as ‘The Egg’, is an opera house in Beijing, China. It is a great piece of architecture completed in 2007, situated in the middle of an artificial lake with patrons entering the building from the shore through a glass hallway underneath the lake. This allows the entire exterior of the building to have no openings, and have a complete titanium and glass shell with a picturesque reflection in the lake.

ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH:

This is an original photograph of Table Mountain, over looking the city of Cape Town in South Africa, my original home town where I grew up and lived till 2001. I feel its a great land scape picture, taken from Robben Island, of a uniquely shaped mountain and a city that I love dearly.
